Cleveland Divers Newsletter

Waves Shape

By June Coomber

It has been quite a while since the club’s last newsletter but as there is so much happening this year the idea of a regular newsletter has been resurrected!

While the beginning of the year is generally slow with regard to diving events the pace has certainly picked up since the spring.

Diving

Diving events such as the club’s annual trip to Appin, which generally marks the start of the club’s diving season in April, was well attended by club members, making it a successful trip once again. This was followed by a weekend diving trip to Beadnell in June. A new diving venue for some of our club members but some great diving was enjoyed.
There have also been one off diving trips to St Abbs on Paul’s boat ‘Pathfinder’ and many local dive outings at Runswick Bay and of course the gare at Redcar.
This year it has been good to see members taking advantage of more club boat outings for local dives.
Diving events coming up are
St. Abbs 29th July 2023 on Pathfinder ( contact Simon Wilcock)
Farne Island 5th August 2023 ( contact Steve Smith)
Anglesey 22nd/23rd/24th September ( contact John Lampett)

Training

Although the club is currently on its annual summer break from pool sessions Monday evenings sessions have been very busy with a number of Try Dive courses that have resulted in an increase in membership, which currently stands at 39, and subsequently an increase in Ocean Diver trainees. At this moment in time all Ocean Diver trainees have completed their pool training and have embarked on Ocean Diver open water training.
Over the past few months our club instructors have been engaged in a frenzy of training sessions at Ellerton, Capernwray and Redcar which has resulted in
* 4 Ocean Diver trainees completing their theory sessions and open water training.
* 4 Sport diver trainees completing their theory training
* 2 sport divers completing their open water training
* 4 dive leader trainees completing their theory training
*3 dive leaders completing their open water training.

Instructors meet each month to plan and organise training and on behalf of the club members I would like to thank all instructors for their time and commitment to the club’s trainee members.
In addition, a number of members have completed ‘Skill Development Courses,’ (SDC) such as buoyancy and trim, accelerated decompression diving, diver first aid and boat handling.
Some members are very keen to develop their skills further and are signing up for a boat handling course, compressor handling course and an Instructor Foundation Course (IFC) which will take place sometime later this year.

Social Events

The club’s presentation night on the 18th of March was well attended and an opportunity to present to the RNLI representatives who attended a cheque for £2000, money raised by club members. The Club’s curry night held May 13th was also a successful evening.
The next social gathering is the club’s annual barbecue/ picnic which will be held on Saturday 19th August 2023 from 4pm in the grounds of Saltburn Tennis Club. Members their family and friends all welcome.

Club Management

The committee continues to meet each month to manage club affairs and with many thanks to Donna Russell’s hard work the committee is happy to announce the launch of the club’s website https://www.clevelanddivers.org.uk/ Why not visit the site and find out what is going on with your club.
