Cleveland Divers Spring into Diving 26th March 2023 at Ellerton Park
On this first day of ‘British Summer Time’ a number of club members took to the water at Ellerton Park to test out their winter-stored diving kit and take part in open water training. With kind, mild, dry spring weather there was a good turnout which comprised of 10 trainees, 6 instructors, and 2 supporting volunteer members.
First task of the day was a group briefing by the dive manager followed by the customary photo shoot, before our 3 Ocean diver trainees, 3 sport diver trainees, 4 Dive leader trainees and 2 volunteers split into their assigned groups for their instructor’s briefing. Following the all -important functionality kit check, kitting up, and buddy check our trainees were primed and ready to go. With good surface conditions and water temperature at a pleasant 8 degrees, our Ocean Diver and Sports Diver trainees were soon immersed in their in-water training program. A different approach to elements of some of the training, this day, meant that after Sport diver trainees carried out their CBL they then became the casualty that Dive Leader trainees rescued, by administering 2 surface rescue breaths, towing them 50m to shore, de-kitting them and then simulating BLS with enriched oxygen.
Team co-operation helped to make this training day all -inclusive with all members from all grades, including our volunteers, practicing and learning skills within and beyond their target grades as well as leaving enough time for some members to enjoy an exploration dive in the afternoon. Training and kit-check days are a must if club members are to maintain the club’s excellent safe diving record. So well done and many thanks for the commitment of trainees, volunteers and instructors who make training days like these possible.
